| Suggested Itinerary for your quick trip to New Zealand: Day 1 USA to Auckland Leave Los Angeles this evening for your flight across the Pacific Ocean to New Zealand. Day 2 In Flight In flight over the International Date Line. Day 3 Auckland After arrival, you have the rest of the afternoon free to relax and explore this charming city. Auckland, is situated between two enormous harbors and dotted with 48 extinct volcanic cones. Day 4 Auckland to Rotorua Pick up your rental car this morning and leave Auckland to head south. The trip south takes you through prime Waikato farmland. Visit the Waitomo Caves, famous for its vast subterranean cave systems decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and glow-worms. Continue to Rotorua via a mixture of farmland, lakes and forest. You’ll know you’ve arrived in the city of Rotorua when you see (and smell!) the geothermal steam plumes of Whakarewarewa. Rotorua sits squarely on the Pacific Ring of Fire, so there’s evidence of volcanic activity everywhere you look. Day 5 Rotorua Explore some of the geothermal areas and discover the unique culture of New Zealand’s Maori people. Rotorua is interesting in any weather, at any time of the year. Day 6 Rotorua to Lake Taupo The road to Taupo will keep you entertained with its unusual, volcanic geography. Take a side road to a geothermal park, where you’ll discover geysers, silica terraces and craters of boiling mud. Towards the end of your journey you’ll encounter the raging Huka Falls. Day 7 Lake Taupo/Tongariro National Park The resort town of Taupo sits on the edge of New Zealand’s largest lake, which is well stocked with sizeable trout. Nearby is Tongariro National Park with its active Ruapehu volcano. Enjoy the alpine scenery, the drive along the eastern edge of Lake Taupo is very scenic. Day 8 Taupo to Wellington via Napier The major attraction on the road from Taupo to Napier is the fantastic scenery. There’s a bit of everything - rugged hills, beautiful valleys, gentle plains and huge vistas. At Tarawera you can walk to the hot springs, which are above the Waipunga River. You might also want to stop at the Waiarua Falls lookout, to view the twin waterfalls. Napier is famous for its pure Art Deco style. More than 40 vineyards are clustered in the area, and many have fine restaurants on-site On your way south you’ll drive through Dannevirke, a town originally settled by Scandinavians, you can inspect locally made knitwear. Woodville is a place for antique browsing. The wildlife sanctuary at Mt Bruce is an essential stop, before arriving in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. Day 9 Wellington Wellington is compact, cultured and full of character. Nestled between the harbour and the hills, the downtown area is ideal for explorations on foot. Enjoy cafes, restaurants, museums and all kinds of shops. Dance, theatre and musical performances are a Wellington specialty. Day 10 Wellington to USA Return your rental car and take a domestic flight from Wellington to Auckland, connecting to your international flight back to the US, arriving on the same day. |
